What would you do? due 10/24/2017

Many people communicate and share information through Facebook, Twitter, and other examples of social media. There have been several cases where law enforcement officers and other public officials have been disciplined for comments made on their own private Facebook or Twitter accounts.

For your discussion post this week, review the following scenario.

You are the Sheriff in your county. You have been informed that one of your deputies, Mark, posted the following post on his private Facebook account (which appeared exactly as follows):
I can’t believe Tim got that promotion. What a joke! He’s not qualified and I have more xperience than him. What the hell is the sheriff thinkin. He’s going to regret that decision and i’m gonna make Tim’s life miserable. I cant wait to see how bad Tim screws up. LOL!
Mark did not share the post with the general public, but did share it with many other deputies in the department and with law enforcement officers from other local law enforcement agencies. An officer from a different agency saw the post and brought the Facebook post to your attention.

Next, conduct research to identify your state’s rules of professional conduct for law enforcement officers.

For your first post, identify any applicable professionals standards of conduct that you think apply to the situation. To begin your research, find your state organization through the National POST portal on the website for the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST).

For your reply post, respond to a student who discussed a different opinion or perspective regarding the Facebook post. Explain whether you agree or disagree.
