Imagine that a family friend or colleague has just been diagnosed with cancer. Explain how the American Cancer Society might provide education and support. What ACS services would you recommend and why?
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide community based voluntary organization that is dedicated to eliminating cancer. In the meantime, the ACS provides funding, research, shares expert research, supports patients, and spreads the word about prevention (“Mark Your Bottom,†n.d.). The American Cancer Society helps the patient and their family understand their diagnosis, manage their lives through treatments and recoveries, and side effects. They provide support by helping patients find the right health care team, insurance, and provide help with finances, and provide emotional support to the patient, family and caregivers.
Being newly diagnosed with cancer can be very devastating and scary to the patient and their loved ones. Surely one of the first questions that would come to mind would be, “I am going to die?†Therefore, the ACS service I would initially recommend would be education. Having answers to questions can help feel more in control and less worried about what is going to happen next. The ACS can answer questions from “what is cancer?†to making treatment decisions, to “how do I talk to people about having cancer?†to “how will I pay for all of this?†(Mark Your Bottom, “ n.d.).
According to statistics published by the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 1.5 million new cancer cases diagnosed each year over the next decade. What factors contribute to the yearly incidence and mortality rates of various cancers in Americans? What changes in policy and practice are most likely to affect these figures over time?
Factors that contribute to the yearly incidence and mortality rates of various cancers in Americans are smoking, obesity, lack of activity, poor nutrition, lack of protection from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, not vaccinating against human papillary virus (HPV), lack of cancer screening for both men, women and adolescents such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and skin screening and testing such as procedures, imaging, and biopsy and cytology testing (Mark Your Bottom,“ n.d.).
Changes in policy and practice that can improve these cancer cases starts with education which can come in the form of doctor’s office and schools. Advertisement can make a huge impact on awareness. This can be shared on the news, commercials on TV and at the movie theater, billboards, and through social media. Awareness is key.
Select a research program from among those funded by the American Cancer Society. Describe the program and discuss what impact the research will have on the prevention or treatment of cancer.
Helping More Women Survive Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) is a program funded by the ACS. This program is studying what makes breast cancer spread to vital organs. MBC is the cause of about 90% of deaths from cancer. Research is being conducted for the development of new treatments that may stop metastasis and possibly even improve cure rates (Breast Cancer Research,†n.d.)
