After he engages in one of these behaviors, he yells, “It hurts!”and starts laughing.A behavior analyst has conducted a structured interview as partof afunctional behaviorassessment for Stephen. The teacher and parents’ responses indicate that the function ofStephen’s aggressive behaviors is to seekattention.Keeping this information in mind, theanalyst needstodirectlyassessStephen’sbehavior.Stephen’s generaleducation teacher, Ms. Gonzales,has recorded data regarding thefrequency ofhis behaviors, but with inconsistency as she is the only adult intheclassroom.  The special education teacher, Mr. Kuchar, has not been able tospend muchtime in the inclusion classroom to support Stephen and Ms. Gonzales and toobserveStephen’s behavior. Ms.Gonzales has requesteda meeting withthe Child Study Team todiscuss thepossibility of changingStephen’splacement.Ms. Gonzales frequently communicates withStephen’s parents and has mentioned apossible placement change to them.  Stephen’s parents do not want him to be pulled outof the inclusion classroom even though otherstudents arebeing hurt.Currently, there arefive other studentsin the inclusion classroom who receive special education servicesforbehavior issues.  Stephen’s behaviors are the most severe.  Ms. Gonzales does not feelshe caneffectively meet Stephen’s needswith regards tohis behaviors and keep the otherstudents from beinghurt.Mr. Kuchar agrees that Stephen needsto be placed ina different classroom tobetterfithis needs; however, he has realizedthat there is inconsistent data collected thus far tosupport thisneed.Theschool principal alsoagrees with the suggestionof aplacementchange and has asked Mr. Kuchar to set up a meeting to discussthiswithStephen’sparents.
