Your task is to write an essay in which you summarize Dan Rather’s argument and respond to his argument with your own point of view. Your post must be at least 300 words. Your journal entry must include:

1. A summary of Rather’s argument. Remember not to summarize too much or too little and that even summaries need to be cited. Also, remember to play the “Believing Game” by keeping your tone neutral when summarizing. Generally, summaries do not include quotes, although this isn’t a hard and fast rule.

2. A clear response to the article backed up with textual evidence. This textual evidence must include one quote from the article and one paraphrase. Remember to cite both parenthetically and frame each element appropriately (make sure you use a proper signal phrase and explain the text’s meaning).

Hint: to make sure you get credit for the quote and the paraphrase, it may be helpful to mark where those items occur in your response.

Another hint: Be careful with indirect source quotations. This is when you are quoting a source that is already being quoted. For example, in Dan Rather’s article, he quotes his mother. If you want to quote his mother (who Rather is already quoting), you have to follow a special formula. Please see the top of 501 in RFW for this formula.
